When you start planning your first business website, there are a few critical questions you need to ask yourself:

  • Who will your target audience be?
  • What will you do to allow your target audience to find you?
  • How will you convert your visitors into sales?
  • You would think that these few questions seem obvious, however you’d be amazed at how many people do not know the answer to any of these, yet they have a website and complain that their website isn’t doing what it should to bring in business. Just because you have a website doesn’t mean business will just fall into your lap.

3 Simple Steps To Your First Business Website

  1. Who will your target audience be? Think nicely about who you want to target. Why do you specifically want these people to visit your website? Your answer would most likely be anyone who is wanting to buy your specific product or service. However, just saying that you want anyone and everyone to be your market is much too vague, this means your website will lack focus, and not fully maximize its potential. Ideally you want to create a niche.
  2. What will you do to allow your target market to find you? When you creating a niche this will also help you with search engines, which in turn drives hot leads to your website. Think about what specific keywords your target market might type into a search engine in order to find you. Take the time to actually do the online searches yourself, see who appears in say the top 20. This is where you need to be! Which of your competitors there? Take a look at their websites. Do all their pages work? What can you do to improve on them? Identify something unique about your business which sets you apart from the rest.

You need to then ensure that those keywords or keyphrases are incorporated into your website within the page titles, headings, and in the internal links.

Ensure that you are specific with your keyphrases. This will ensure that they are less competitive than the more general single word searches, which will more accurately target your market. I am sure you are aware from your own experience, if you don’t find what you are looking for in the first 3 results pages, at the most, you look elsewhere.

  3. How will you convert your visitors into sales? Don’t just tell them what product or service you are offering, tell them why they have to have it! Offer them incentives, freebies, discounts – anything you can to ensure you get that conversation started.

Current research indicates that the human brain makes a judgment about a web page within a twentieth of a second!

That doesn’t leave you very long to make an impression. So, make sure that you have your Unique Selling Point (USP) clearly visible on your home page – and preferably prominent on every one of your other pages. After all, it’s not a given that the home page will be the first page that the visitor sees, particularly if they have found you via a search engine.

Then make sure that you list your bullet-pointed guarantees. Visitors have to understand why you are different from the rest, and why they should deal with you and not your competitors. And as we’ve discovered, they have to understand this pretty much instantly.

Lastly, ensure your website has a funnel-like structure. Identify your most important pages which are normally the “call to action” or purchase pages and ensure all roads lead to those pages. Make sure all your internal links describe the specific target page. If you are selling green tables, don’t call your products page “Products”, call it “green tables”, and make sure that the links pointing at this page also say “green tables”. This will not only help the search engines identify and rank the most important pages in your website, it will also lead your visitor to that all important conversion.

Hope these tips come in handy when thinking about creating a website for your business.
