Getting a business started is a challenge. There are lot of moving parts. You need to get a lot done to have a smooth operation. Here are a couple of tips on starting a successful business.

  1. Have Clear Written Goals: This is where it starts. This is the foundation for success in any business. Know exactly where you are heading. How? Have clear goals written down. Review these often.
    • What will the business ‘look’ like in the future?
    • How will you know when your business is a success?
    • When you wake up in the morning, do you know what actions you have to take to get you on the road to success?
    • How will you get clients?
    • What are your sales goals?
    • What are your short, medium and long term goals?
  2. Take Action: The difference between success and failure is comes down to one thing. Taking action. No action, no results.  This does not mean you will not fail. It is not about the failure. It is about how you bounce back when it happens.
  3. Get Feedback: There is a saying that feedback is the breakfast of champions. Talk to customers, suppliers, your bank manager, your accountant – anyone who can provide you with a fresh perspective and new insight. Get answers on the following:
    • What is working?
    • What doesn’t work?
    • What needs changing slightly?
    • What do you need to start doing?
    • What do you need to stop doing?
  4. What You Don’t Know: You cannot expect to know everything about running a business from the first day. There is a lot to learn. Have one of your goals to learn and discover more about running a successful business. Attend seminars, enroll in courses, develop your skills on a daily basis.
  5. Laser Focus: Stay focused.  There are a lot of distractions. Start your day right. Have a routine and keep on taking the next step to move your business forward.
  6. Take Calculated Risks! In business there are risks. Calculate your risks and mitigate it by planning. Do tests and see what works before committing to something.
  7. Think and Stay Positive. 99% of success in business happens between your ears. What you think and how you react to daily challenges will determine whether you are successful or not.
